Smartlead vs Instantly

Both are high-volume cold email platforms built on unlimited mailboxes and native warmup, so they look alike at first. They split on philosophy: Smartlead leads with deliverability infrastructure and agency tooling, Instantly with an all-in-one stack and a slicker interface.

Instantly is the all-in-one pick

A slicker interface, the largest warmup network, and a 450M lead database, CRM, and AI agents under one roof, though priced as separate modules you add on.

Feature checklist

What each one can and cannot do

A capability check, scored the same way for both tools.

Capability Smartlead Instantly
Unlimited mailboxes
Native email warmup (free)
Inbox / sender rotation
Unified master inbox Master Inbox Unibox
Built-in lead database 300M+ 450M+
Spam placement testing SmartDelivery, add-on Inbox Placement, add-on

Ratings & reviews

What real users say

Public review scores and the themes that come up most, checked June 2026. Counts drift, so the live links are the source of truth.

Smartlead

Praised for: unlimited inboxes with free warmup, a clean interface, and the API and white-label kit that agencies build their stack on.

Watch-outs: inconsistent support, reliability wobbles at high volume (mailbox disconnects), and a setup learning curve. The Trustpilot score runs well below the G2 one.

Instantly

Praised for: the unlimited-inbox model, the large warmup network, and a fast, clean campaign builder that gets people sending quickly.

Watch-outs: unbundled pricing that climbs as you add modules, warmup scores that do not always match real inbox placement, and support or account-suspension complaints.

Read the scores in context. Instantly's G2 sample is far larger, over 4,000 reviews against Smartlead's roughly 300, so its 4.8 is more battle-tested. But both tools score lower on Trustpilot than on G2, where deliverability and support complaints surface more often. We show G2 and Trustpilot here because both have a solid review base for each tool; Capterra's samples were too thin or unverified to compare fairly.

The deciding factors

Where each one actually wins

Six things separate these tools in practice. Here is the honest call on each.

Deliverability and warmup reality

Edge: split

This is the issue that decides cold email. Both give unlimited mailboxes and free warmup, and Instantly's pool is the larger of the two, more than a million inboxes. The honest part: 2026 placement testing shows warmup scores on both tools can read healthy while real mail still lands in spam. Smartlead gives more levers to manage it, with placement testing and dedicated IPs. Neither warmup is a guarantee.

Agency and white-label tooling

Edge: Smartlead

Smartlead is the agency default for a reason. White-label client portals, per-client workspaces, and a deep REST API let you run many client accounts under your own brand, with white-labeling from $29 per workspace. Instantly has an agency bundle and unlimited seats, but its white-label depth is thinner, so multi-client shops tend to land on Smartlead.

Pricing model and true cost

Edge: depends

Headline prices are close, but what they include is not. Smartlead bundles warmup, rotation, and the master inbox into the plan, then charges for the prospect database ($59/mo) and white-label on top. Instantly unbundles harder: sending, lead data, CRM, and infrastructure are separate lines, so a $47 plan can become roughly $150 once the stack is complete. Read what is included before comparing numbers.

Lead data built in

Edge: Instantly

Both ship a database now, which older reviews miss. Instantly's Lead Finder lists 450M+ contacts and is the more mature of the two, billed by credits. Smartlead's SmartProspect lists 300M+ and is newer, with a $59 a month upkeep fee. Both are email only, with no native phone numbers, so cold callers still bring their own data either way.

Interface and ease of setup

Edge: Instantly

Instantly's campaign builder is widely called the cleanest in the category, and a lean team gets sending fast. Smartlead is more powerful but the interface is dated, and the DNS, rotation, and warmup setup take more technical effort. If time to first campaign matters more than depth, Instantly is the gentler start.

API depth and extensibility

Edge: Smartlead

Smartlead's full REST API and webhooks run at user, client, and campaign scope, available from the Pro plan, and it is the one teams build custom workflows on. Instantly has a public API too, but reviewers report more friction with it. If you plan to wire your sender into Clay, a CRM, or your own tooling, Smartlead gives you more to work with.

Smartlead

USD / per plan
  • Base
Unlimited mailboxes, free warmup, 6,000 emails/mo, 2,000 leads
    $39/mo
  • Pro
30,000 emails, API and webhooks, CRM integrations, white-label eligible
    $94/mo
  • Unlimited Smart
Unlimited contacts, 150,000 emails, Ultra Premium Warmup
    $174/mo

Free trial, no free plan. Annual billing is ~17% lower. Unlimited Prime runs $379/mo. Add-ons stack on top: SmartProspect data ($59/mo), white-label ($29/workspace), SmartDelivery testing.

Instantly

USD / per module
  • Growth
Sending: unlimited mailboxes, free warmup, 5,000 emails/mo
    $47/mo
  • Hypergrowth
    Sending: 100,000 emails/mo, 25,000 contacts, Unibox
    $97/mo
  • Lead database / CRM
450M database and CRM priced separately by credits
    from $9/mo

14-day trial, no free plan. Prices are the Outreach (sending) plan; the lead database, CRM, AI credits, and managed inboxes (AirMail, $4/inbox) are separate. All-in-one bundles start around $85/mo.

True cost at scale. The entry numbers look close, but what they include is not. Smartlead folds warmup, rotation, and the master inbox into the plan, then charges for data and white-label on top. Instantly prices sending, data, CRM, and AI as separate modules, so a $47 plan becomes roughly $150 once the stack is complete. Price the whole stack you need, not the entry tier.

The honest gap

What neither tool does well

Both are sending platforms, so they share the same blind spots. Worth knowing before you expect either to run your whole motion.

Finding the right accounts

Both send well, but neither tells you which accounts are in-market right now. That is targeting, not sending.

True multichannel

These are email engines. Neither runs native LinkedIn, SMS, or social steps, so multichannel means bolting on another tool.

Deliverability guarantees

A big warmup pool is not the same as landing in the inbox. Both still need real domain hygiene, sane volume, and placement testing.

How we'd choose

Our take, after running both

The choice is mostly about how you operate, not a feature count. Here is how we'd call it in three situations.

1
You run an agency, pick Smartlead

White-label client portals, per-client workspaces, and the deep API make multi-client outbound manageable in a way Instantly's modules do not.

2
You want one slick stack, pick Instantly

The cleanest builder, the biggest warmup network, plus data, CRM, and AI agents in one place get a lean team sending fast.

3
Either way, sending is not strategy

Both put mail in inboxes. Neither finds the right accounts or times the outreach on a real signal. That part is on you, or on us.

Not sure which fits? We run signal-based outbound for early-stage teams and will tell you straight.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Is Instantly better than Smartlead?
Neither is better outright. They do the same job and split on how you work. Instantly is stronger if you want the cleanest interface, the largest warmup network, and lead data, CRM, and AI agents in one place. Smartlead is stronger if you run an agency or want deliverability control, a deep API, and white-label client portals.
Which is cheaper, Smartlead or Instantly?
Entry pricing is close: Smartlead's Base plan is $39 a month and Instantly's Growth sending plan is $47 a month (both verified June 2026). But Instantly unbundles its lead database, CRM, and AI into separate modules, so a working stack often lands near $150 a month. Smartlead folds more into the plan, then charges for data and white-label on top. Compare the full stack, not the entry tier.
Do Smartlead and Instantly both include email warmup?
Yes. Both include native email warmup, free and unlimited, on every paid plan, and both run unlimited mailboxes. Instantly advertises the larger warmup network, more than a million inboxes. Note that in 2026 testing, warmup scores on both tools did not always predict real inbox placement, so warmup helps but is not a guarantee.
Which has the bigger lead database, Smartlead or Instantly?
Instantly's Lead Finder lists more than 450 million contacts and is the more mature of the two, billed by credits. Smartlead's SmartProspect database lists more than 300 million and carries a $59 a month upkeep fee. Both cover email only, with no native phone numbers, so cold callers still need a separate data source.
Which is better for agencies, Smartlead or Instantly?
Smartlead is the more common agency pick. It has white-label client portals, per-client workspaces, and a deep REST API, with white-labeling from $29 per workspace. Instantly offers an agency bundle and unlimited seats, but its white-label depth is thinner. If you manage multiple client accounts, Smartlead usually fits better.
Which has better reviews, Smartlead or Instantly?
Instantly scores 4.8 out of 5 on G2 across more than 4,000 reviews, against Smartlead's 4.6 on around 300 (checked June 2026), so Instantly's score is more battle-tested. Both score lower on Trustpilot, 4.0 for Instantly and 3.4 for Smartlead, where deliverability and support complaints surface more often.
Can Smartlead or Instantly find leads and run multichannel too?
Both now bundle a lead database, so basic prospecting is built in. Neither runs true multichannel, though: they are email engines, with no native LinkedIn or SMS steps, although Smartlead recently added AI calling. For LinkedIn-led outreach, pair either with a dedicated tool like HeyReach or Lemlist. See our best cold email tools guide for the full sending shortlist.
